The Board and Batten Homes of Schomberg

Schomberg residents care deeply about the preservation of the homes and buildings here.
“The distinctive charm of the village is provided in large part by the heritage buildings that still line Main Street; preserved not as time capsules but as living buildings that acquire more character with each passing decade.” Many homes in Schomberg have board-and-batten siding that need to be maintained regularly with paint or stain.

Board and batten is a type of exterior paneling that has alternating wide boards and narrow wooden strips, called “battens.” The boards are usually one foot wide. The boards may be placed horizontally or vertically. The battens are usually six inches wide. Board-and-batten siding is sometimes called barn siding because many barns are constructed this way. Board and batten became popular in Ontario in the early nineteenth century. It was especially practical on barns because it was an inexpensive and easy way to construct a sturdy building. Board and batten remained popular for barns until the late twentieth century when metal siding became common. Today, board-and-batten siding is used on newer homes to achieve an informal and comfortable outdoor look.

Exterior Painting Service for Schomberg Homes

There are many benefits to painting and maintaining the exterior of a house. A well-painted home can increase its value, make it more attractive, and protect it from the elements. A good coat of paint will also seal the home’s surface and prevent moisture damage. Furthermore, a regular maintenance schedule can help catch small problems before they become big ones. By keeping your home exterior in good condition, you’ll be able to enjoy it for many years to come.

Exterior maintenance tip: every year, trim any trees or bushes that are close to your home, as they can damage the paint with their branches.

Painting and Decorating the Interior of Your Home

The benefits of painting your home interior are many. The most obvious reason to paint your home is for decorative purposes. New home colours can brighten up a room and make it look fresh. If you are selling your home, a freshly painted interior can help it look newer and attractive to potential buyers. Painting your home’s interior also helps to protect it from damage. Over time, walls can become stained or damaged, but painting them will keep them looking good for years. Additionally, if you ever decide to sell your home, a freshly painted interior will be one of the first things that potential buyers will notice and may be a deciding factor in whether they buy your home or not.

Interior decorating tip: keep records of the paint and colours you use in your home, it will be very useful to your next paint contractor.

Painting Services Available in Schomberg

When it comes to painting services, older homes require a different approach than newer homes. Older exteriors require more prep work such as power sanding and scraping. This is because the alkyd paint usually present on older homes is brittle, and tends to crack and chip. Almost always, primers are used to achieve a good bond between the new paint and the old paint. Older interiors need more prep work and maintenance. Some homes may still have plaster walls, that while structurally sound, have cracks that need extensive patching and repair.

We offer complete interior and exterior painting for new and older older homes. Whether you are painting your living room or your entire house inside out, the Ecopainting service will surprise you.

A Customer Testimonial

“We had Ecopainting paint our home last month and we couldn’t be more pleased with the final product. Karon came to provide us with a quote and a consultation. After spending a lot of her time answering our many questions, we picked some wonderful warm colours. When the painters came, they were professional and hard working. Sarah was amazing and she even helped us patch the ceiling in our basement rec room. Their attention to detail and skillset transformed our new house into a home we will enjoy for years to come. Thank you Ecopainting, we are looking forward to painting our exterior next year.”
Annette R. – Interior painting customer.

The spring of 2020 was a difficult one for many contractors, and painters in particular. Our main focus then, was the safety of our painters and our customers peace of mind. The homeowners themselves, were uneasy inviting strangers into their home and decided to only tackle the maintenance of their exteriors at this time. Chris and Jessica were such clients. They contracted with Ecopainting to paint and stain the exterior of their lovely Schomberg home.

The Scope – Paint and Stain Specification

  • Apply two coats of stain on the  board & batten siding.
  • Remove the shutters and re-install them after painting.
  • Paint the window frames, screen door and frame in white.
  • Prep of surfaces including filling major holes with exterior wood filler

Products and colours. After inspecting the home we suggested products from Sansin Stains or Benjamin Moore. The customers liked the colour Hale Navy from Benjamin Moore’s solid stain collection. The trim paint will be from Benjamin Moore’s Regal and Ben lines in white.

Challenges and Concerns. The electrical power lines were very close to the work area. The standard procedure is to have the power-lines covered for safety. This was not a good option for the customer at this time, because of the waiting period. The local hydro suggested that they disconnect the power instead, for a few hours. We went with that suggestion, as it gave the crew sufficient time to paint in the proximity of the wires.

Conclusion. The project was completed successfully and the home looks beautiful. The customer was ecstatic with the new look and not surprisingly, we are now getting more referrals and enquiries to paint in Schomberg.
